Retrospective analysis of the clinical presentation and imaging of eight primary benign mediastinal schwannomas

Abstract Objective Mediastinal schwannomas are sometimes confused with other neoplasms during initial radiological studies, especially when there is a history of cancer in another area. In these cases, more accurate analysis using computed tomography (CT) or even magnetic resonance (MRI) required. Our study aimed to perform retrospective the clinical and imaging features for series patients mediastinal that were confirmed by histology immunohistochemistry. Results We found eight patients, five men three women, an average age 51 years this study. The main signs symptoms at diagnosis chest pain, dyspnea, cough, dysphagia. CT showed tumor was located posterior compartment 7/8 cases. Tumors > 10 cm heterogeneous cystic changes. All underwent posterolateral thoracotomy, follow-up no evidence recurrence. Histological considered gold standard confirm diagnosis, along least one neurogenic IHC marker. conclusion, benign encapsulated tumors. According CT, show degeneration frequently. Posterolateral thoracotomy allows complete resection surgical approach choice.
